Diamond in the Rough: Carter Tucker

McKinley High School’s Carter Tucker is a talented football player with a story to tell. He is a triple threat who encompasses undeniable skills, good character, and even better grades. Tucker stands 5’8” and weighs 285 lbs. He benches 285 lbs., squats 505 lbs. and power cleans 250 lbs. Carter is currently a junior, maintains a 3.7 gpa, and holds the position of defensive tackle on the Panther’s roster.

Tucker has been playing football for about 8 years starting when he was in the 4th grade. When asked why does he play football, he responded “The first game I ever went to was at LSU; I was with my dad. I told my dad that I wanted to play for LSU. So, my dad got me into the BREC league and then eventually I came to McKinley High. I started on the junior varsity at defensive tackle”.

Tucker told a story about a teammate who passed away; his name was Bryant “Bj” Lee. “He brought the team together. He was one of the top guys in the class academically. He always had a smile on his face. Bj would always encourage me as well as the rest of the team. He tried to keep us all away from trouble and bad situations. When I received the news that he had died, I was shocked. I was out of the state at the time and I just stopped. I remember wishing that he was okay. I knew the feeling all too well because another teammate of mine was killed my freshman year. I wasn’t prepared to experience those emotions again”. We appreciate Carter for sharing that with us; we know that was difficult for him.

Carter feels that he could have performed better on the field last year. This year he plans to be a leader. When asked, what are some specific goals he has for this year, he answered “I want to make all-district. I also want to have a double-digit sac season, three or more forced fumbles, and a pick six. I want better than a 4.0 gpa and to score really well on the ACT”. This kid has goals! So far, Tucker has visited camps at Southern University and LSU. He plans to study computer engineering at whichever college he attends.

We’re looking forward to what Carter has in store for the rest of this season as well as his senior year at McKinley. Good luck, Panthers!
