Diamond In the Rough: Mark Coppola

University High, located on LSU’s campus, continues to build and pump out great athletes. U-High’s 2019 class falls nothing short of great and will be one of the best recruiting classes. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Coppola, who could be one of the top defensive end recruits of U-High’s 2019 class. Mark is only 16 years old and going into his Junior year this fall. He maintains an astounding 3.9 GPA on a 4.0 scale and scored a 26 on the ACT, as a sophomore. Therefore, it was no surprise that Mark wants to follow in his mom’s and grandmother’s footsteps, by being in the medical field, and one day becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. He said, “I really enjoy helping people, like athletes getting back on their feet. I don’t mind blood. I find it interesting because I’ve seen injuries and I just want to be able to help.”

Mark is 6’1” tall and weighs 220 lbs. However, he started playing football when he was a lot smaller at 7 years old. It was at that time, he started developing a passion for the sport. “I fell in love with the game. There is just nothing like it. Plus, not many sane people will run full speed at each other for 60 minutes” he said. Of course, Mark would be elated to play in the NFL one day but right now college is his main focus. Watch his highlight film below.

Mark has not made a decision on what school he will be attending and there is still plenty of time to do so. He has visited Tulane a couple of times and loves their academics as well as their coaches. With Mark’s athleticism and him standing out academically, he is the defensive end that every college should want. Mark said his dream school would have to be Stanford University because of their prestigious academics.

His mom says he is a hard worker on and off of the field. He set a personal goal to run faster and went from running a 5 second 40-yard dash to running it in 4.7 seconds. Academically, he excels and this past year he received the Author’s Award for a short story he wrote.

Mark Coppola is the threat you want to have on your defensive line as a coach. He always puts the team first and does not care to have the focus be placed on himself. Mark likes to motivate his teammates and does what is in the best interest of the team so that they can win games.
