I met with the coaching staff on Tuesday at Dutchtown High School. After the worst season since their induction in 2003, the long time head coach Benny Saia resigned. Dutchtown has a long standing history of putting guys in major DI schools just about every year. Most notably are Eric Reid, Landon Collins, and Eddie Lacy.
Dutchtown has a great football atmosphere on game day. I was blessed to be a part of the coaching staff in 2011 and I saw first hand that on Fridays the town would close up shop, fans would show up as soon as school let out to start the pregame festivities and tailgating. For the game, thousands of the fans, alumni, and parents would fall in and begin chanting for the Griffins.
I spoke to the new head coach Guy Mistretta, who spent the past three years as the head coach/ AD of Livonia High School. He had only been on the job for 10 days and he said that he was still getting to know his team.
I spoke to a few of the coaches that I knew from my time at Dutchtown. I asked them what were their thoughts on the team. Each of them said that they have a great group of young men and are proud to be there to coach them. They are still waiting to see who will be stepping up to lead the team on and off the field. I was excited to see DI coaches at practice and evaluate the talent deep school. With college coaches on the sidelines, that means only one thing, Dutchtown is on the verge of returning atop of the 5A rankings.
