Southern University Falls to Prairie View A&M 42-47

By: Chassity Oubre

Southern University Jaguar football team saw their 2015 homecoming festives end on a sour note. All the happening outside the Jaguar football stadium may have been popping and rocking, but that certainly was not the case on the playing field. The Jaguars were hosting the Prairie View A&M Cougars for this season’s homecoming game. The Jaguars entered the game with a 3-0 conference record, while the Cougars were posting a 3-1 conference record. Needless to say, this was a big game for the Jaguars not even considering that it was homecoming. Many would think that the Jaguars probably hurt themselves more than the Cougars did on this beautiful Saturday night in Baton Rouge. It appeared as if the Jaguars had not fumbled six times, losing four of those fumbles, the ending of this homecoming game may have produced a different outcome. The Jaguars fought hard but could not quite overcome all the miscues, which gave Prairie View Cougars victory with a 47-42 final score.

He rushed for two scores and caught passes for two more scores. Southern led in scoring in each quarter except the fourth quarter (20-12), which proved to be enough for Prairie View to come out on top. Statistically, the Jaguars offense were led by Quarterback Austin Howard who had 18 of 28 passing for 339 yards including two touchdowns and Running Back Lenard Tillery who finished the game with 188 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Southern’s all-purpose player Willie Quinn was a factor in the game also. Quinn provided the Jaguars with a 100 yard touchdown kick return. Defensively, Roshaud Tuner and Kentavious Preston along with Dionte McDuffy all had four solo tackles for the Jaguars. Next up for the Jaguars are the Texas Southern Tigers as they hit the road for Houston, Texas. It is certain that Southern will be working on cleaning up the fumbles before next Saturday’s game.
