Tulane Falls to SMU 37-20

The Tulane Green Wave dropped to 6-6 today after dropping their last regular season game of the year to SMU (10-2), 37-20. Even with the loss, Tulane is bowl eligible for a 2nd straight year under head coach Willie Fritz.

The Green Wave, offensively, outplayed the Mustangs of SMU, but still struggled to find victory. Justin McMillan went 22-37 ATT for 242 yards passing and no interceptions, along with 50 rushing yards on the ground on 15 attempts. Tulane did what they have done all year in regards to rushing, piling up yards by committee. Corey Dauphine led the team with 10 carries for 52 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. The Green Wave’s 2nd touchdown was recorded by Cameron Carroll, who rushed for 47 yards on 13 attempts. Merek Glover accounted for the Green Wave’s remaining 4 6 points, going 2 for 3 on field goals with a long of 42 yards.

Despite the score, Tulane played extremely well on defense, holding SMU’s Shane Buechele to 15-27, but did record 3 touchdowns. Tulane was able to pick off Buechele  once, with Larry Brooks recording the interception. Most of SMU’s offensive production came late into the game finding very little success against the stout Wave defense and not being able to find much production until later in the contest.

Tulane had its opportunities to win the game, controlling time of possession and outgaining SMU in total yardage. The Green Wave unfortunately were not able to turn some crucial redzone trips into touchdowns, which inevitably cost Tulane the ball game against a very good SMU squad.
