Thirteen of 16 Green Wave teams score above the national average

NEW ORLEANS – Thirteen of Tulane’s 16 athletic programs exceeded the NCAA’s Academic Progress

Rate (APR) minimum standards and seven teams earned perfect 1,000 scores, the eighth-most among

NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, according to the latest multi-year APR statistics

announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.

The 2016 report marks the 12th straight year that the APR report has recognized Green Wave student-

athletes for their performance in the classroom.

Last week, seven Green Wave programs were recognized by the NCAA for placing in the top 10 percent

in their respective sports, including men’s cross country, men’s tennis, men’s track, women’s basketball,

women’s bowling, women’s swimming and diving and women’s volleyball, all with perfect scores of

It marked the sixth straight year that the men’s tennis and women’s swimming and diving programs

received the award. More impressively is the fact that all seven programs earned a perfect APR score for

the second straight year as well.

Tulane’s seven teams with perfect scores ranks the Green Wave eighth in the nation among FBS schools,

up one spot from last year, and is the most among American Athletic Conference membership. The

leaders among FBS schools are Notre Dame (16 sports), 2. Stanford (14), 3. Boston College (12), 4.

Minnesota (11), 5. Rice (10), 6. (tie) Duke, Northwestern (9), 8. Tulane (7), 9. (tie) Auburn, Michigan,

North Carolina (6).

The 2016 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compilation of APR data from the 2011-12,

2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. The APR uses a series of formulas related to student-

athlete retention and eligibility to measure the academic performances of all participants who receive

grants-in-aid on every team at every NCAA Division I college and university.

All six Tulane’s men’s teams scored well above the national average in their respective sports. Along

with perfect scores for men’s cross country, men’s tennis and men’s outdoor track & field, men’s

basketball scored a 975, which was 11 points higher than the average APR, while baseball (977) was

seven points higher and football (970) was six points better than the national average.

On the women’s side, seven of nine sports teams registered scores higher than the average of their

national counterparts. Women’s basketball, women’s bowling, women’s swimming & diving and

women’s volleyball all achieved perfect scores while women’s cross country (995), women’s indoor and

outdoor track teams (990) were each nine points above the national average.

Women’s golf produced a 979, while women’s tennis came in with a 967. The only sport not included

was beach volleyball, which is currently in its fifth season, but did not qualify for this year’s report.

“Division I student-athletes learn to balance playing a sport they love with the pursuit of a degree, and we

honor their continued success in the classroom. The APR data prove that students can achieve both

academically and athletically,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said. “Supporting our students as they

work toward graduation is a top priority of everyone involved in college athletics.”
