Diamond In The Rough: Royon Davis

Royon Davis is a class of 2021 safety out of Madison Preparatory Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is 5’10” and weighs 170 pounds. Davis is an aggressive tackler and always goes hard every play. He plays sideline to sideline. Davis is very passionate about the game and loves that he can be the one to make plays for his team. He is also on the Track & Field team at Madison Preparatory Academy.

When did you begin playing football and what motivated you to play this sport?

What motivated me to play football was that when I was little, I always had love for the game. Football was always there for me. It is fun for me to do and it helped me escape.

Do you play any other sports at Madison Preparatory?

I run track. I run the mile. That helps with my stamina on the football field. I am thinking about playing baseball this year, I am not sure.

What’s your favorite thing about being a safety?

My favorite thing about the safety position is that I can see everything. I can see whether if a play is a run or a pass. I am like the head general of the field and I control the play calling.

Do you have any specific goals for this season?

Yes, I have a couple of goals. I want to catch a total of 10 interceptions before the season is over with. I also want to help my team get to the dome and win a State Championship.

How do you think your coaches and teammates would describe you as a player?

I think they would describe me as hardworking and dedicated player. When it’s time to get to business, I get straight to it. I am focused and my mind is focused on the goal.

What has football taught you about yourself or life?

Football has taught me a lot about myself. It has taught me how to never give up, always work hard, and stay focused. It has also taught me to never take what others say about me personally.

What’s your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?

My favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana is the fans. I love our fanbase. Our games are always packed and they always supports us. I love walking on to the field under the Friday night lights and playing the game that I love to play.

What would you tell younger players who want to play high school football one day?

I would tell younger players to stay focused and always grind. Have no days off, and you’ll get to where you want to be.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself going to college and working for my dad’s company. Hopefully, football works out though.

Are there any college or NFL athletes that you look up to or try to model your play style after?

I look up to Tyrann Mathieu. That is my favorite player, and he is one of the best safeties in the game. I like his play style and his swagger. When he comes on the field, he bring a different kind of swagger.

Three words to describe yourself?

Three words to describe myself are dedicated, hardworking and humble.

How do you prepare for an upcoming game?

I watch and study film all week. That is the main thing I do. I pay attention to how they come out and line up. I’ll know all of their motions and what to be prepared for.

What is one thing could you not go a day without?

One thing I can not go a day without is watching film. I always have to watch film everyday on the upcoming team we have to play.

What hobbies do you have outside of sports?

Outside on the weekends, I cut and do my parent’s line. I play video games like Madden and hang out with family.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world right now, where would you pick?

I would pick Los Angeles, California. That is one place I have always wanted to go to.
