McNeese State takes home opener against Southern University

Southern University took on the McNeese Cowboys tonight in an exciting, close scoring game. The match up was anticipated to provide a good game of football which is exactly what it did. McNeese started with the ball and got some yardage on the return while mixing some passes and run plays at the hands of quarterback Cody Orgeron on their first possession. Southern also gained great yardage with some action from running back Devon Benn who is a powerhouse gaining attention for his conference. Southern saw a couple pass completions but felt a little pressure as Kordell Williams and Carlos Scott sacked Ladarius Skelton.

Next,J’Cobi Skinner came back and continued to run the ball which put the Cowboys on the board leaving the score 7-0. The Jaguars came right back with a 16 yard run by Ladarius Skelton who later benefited from a pass interference by McNeese leading to a 15-yard gain. Then, Ladarius Skelton completed a 33-yard pass to Timothy Bedford to even out the score in the first quarter. The Jaguars started off the second quarter with another touchdown but this it was a 43-yard completion to Hunter Register. The Cowboys countered with a long possession ending with a field goal from Noah Anderson. McNeese proceeded to finish off the half with a 12-yard completion from Cody Orgeron to Trevor Begue.

McNeese was the first to put up points in the second half with another field goal from Noah Anderson from 29 yards. Their next possession came with a 18 yard gain from Cody Orgeron running the ball and some yardage from Elijah Mack ended with another touchdown for the Cowboys. The second half brought in Glendon McDaniel as the quarterback for Southern who continued to fight and got another touchdown from Hunter Register making the score 21-34 in the fourth quarter. The very next possession Southern came charging in with some passes and another touchdown that was completes by none other than Glendon McDaniel who ran into the end zone making the score that much closer at 28-34. This left just under three minutes of game time and the ball in the hands of the Cowboys. With that, the game ended at 28-34, McNeese.

Both teams did an incredible job on the field tonight and fought hard to win their opening games but this time the Cowboys came out on top. We hope to see another game between these two in-state teams soon as the talent produced and brought into Louisiana is unrivaled.
